Lindsey Vonn was not given the opportunity to defend her World Cup Title on Saturday in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. Due to harsh weather conditions, the U.S. skier could not catch up the three points that put her behind Germany’s Maria Riesch. Vonn had won the title over the last three years and was ready to record her fourth one when she was informed that the giant slalom was canceled and she would need to be satisfied with second place. According to Vonn, it would not have mattered if she had won or lost, all that she cared about was competing. “Win or lose, I just wanted the chance. I feel devastated,’’ she said in a statement.
Even though Vonn was upset, rival Riesch was the lucky one that could call herself the new World Cup Champion. She had been the runner-up for two consecutive seasons and finally got a chance to bite into her gold medal while standing on the highest podium. In the end, it was not only the outcome that proved to be an upset for at least one person at the event. Spectators and fans had to miss out on an exciting race that would have shown them performances of the best skiers in the world.
