Volleyball is a sport that brings people together, unless you’re the National Volleyball League (NVL). Getting the community together to play volleyball is easy because volleyball is relatively easy to play, few rules, and the rules are easy to understand. Volleyball tournaments are commonly used as a tool by the community to raise money or awareness. Just last month, Hamed Wardak, Ludus Athletics, hosted a volleyball tournament to raise money for global charities such as, Models 4 Water. Volleyball is also a common activity for colleges and universities. Whether it’s mud volleyball, sand volleyball, or a volleyball intramurals.

Volleyball, on a national level is losing, well has lost, attention from the media. A recent sand volleyball tournament, brought big names like; gold medalist Kerri Walsh and Phil Dalhausser also, top NVL players, Jen Kessy and April Ross, but there wasn’t a crowd, there wasn’t even bleachers.

According to USA Today, Kessy and Ross will return along with Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, the 2008 gold medalist, as the teams open the NVL’s season in Baltimore – Kessy, Ross, Dalhausser, and Rogers have qualified for the London Olympics.

The NVL must keep costs low and win more sponsorships. Albert Hannemann, an 18-year beach veteran said, ”It was tough in the marketplace to convince brands to trust in what I was trying to build and get back involved with beach volleyball when beach volleyball didn’t exist anymore.”

Is beach volleyball dying? So many communities, athletes, and adventure seekers, turn to volleyball for fun and fundraising. Hamed Wardak’s volleyball tournment last month is a perfect example of how much volleyball means to the community.

Jeremy Guthrie, Colorado Rockies new pitcher, has the day off, but needs his daily throw. Jeremy decides to tweet to his 34,000-plus follower:

“Anybody on lunch break and up for a catch with me?”

Minutes later Jeremy gets a tweet back from Woody Roseland:

“My man! I’m downtown and have my glove. lets do this!!”

Woody is a stand-up comic who was on his way home from a crucial doctors appointment. Over the last two and half years, Woody was in chemotherapy for five cancer relapses in his knee, lungs and calf. This doctors appointment was crucial because the nurse said to Woody, “You’re good. We don’t need to see you anymore.”

Next thing you know, Woody is tells the cab driver to take him to Coors Field. Woody has a prosthetic leg, he’s hairless, eyelashless, eyebrowless, and his eyes are sunken in from chemo treatment.

When Woody get’s to Coors Field, he’s not sure where to go, with some help and dumb luck, Woody stumbles into Guthrie who was speechless to find Woody, one-leg and hairless, standing in front of him.

It wasn’t long before the two of them were carrying away in conversation. Woody has a way of making light of his situation. To lighten the the conversation, Woody tells Jeremy one of his jokes:

“Being a cancer amputee is like being a really hot girl,” Woody tells audiences. “Everybody sends you flowers and cards. And they stare all the time. And I’m like, ‘Hello? I’m not just a piece of meat. My eyes are up here, thank you.’”

Today (less than a month later), Woody has attended a Rockies game with Guthrie’s wife – Tim Tebow’s foundation, WISH, flew him to Florida for a charity gold tournament – and Jordan Sparks wants to help Woody make a video for his “Cancer Rap.”

Twitter may not worth your time, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be.

Kentucky v. Kansas – The 2012 NCAA Championship is finally here after long weeks of nail-biting match-ups and big-betting on the table.

Tonight, Kentucky and Kansas will fight for the championship title.

Kansas – Kansas star, Thomas Robinson is “a monster,” fun to watch, and expected he give Kentucky a good fight. He’s “like a wrecking ball with a jumpshot,” according to SB Nation. Tyshawn Taylor, Elijah Johnson and Travis Releford – All scored in double figures Saturday in the comeback win again Ohio State.

Kentucky – Sophomore Doron Lamb is Kentucky’s second-leading corer at 13.5 points per game as a 6-4 shooting guard from New York. Kentucky fans are crazy. After Saturday nights win, can you imagine what fans would do if Kentucky won the NCAA Championship? Other key Kentucky players Freshman Anthony Davis, “college basketball’s Play of the Year,” a 6-10 center from Chicago and Marquis Teague a 6-2 guard from Indianapolis.

In the SoccerInferno, the U.S. will place Cuba today. Then the team will then move to play Canada on Saturday and El Salvador on Monday.

To USA Today, Adu said, “Especially for us offensive players…We enjoy having the ball. It makes it a lot easier for our team when we have the ball on our terms and we dictate the play. Everybody’s bought into it.” USA Today reports, Freddy Adu to be the captain in the U.S. soccer match vs. cuba. Adu is famous for the being the youngest MLS age record after playing for D.C. United at only 14.

Caleb Porter, National Team coach, expects Adu’s Olympic experience to be a big asset for the U.S., which he participated in the 2008 Beijing Games. “It’s crucial, because he’s a guy that has been through this process, not only been through it but he’s really done well and been a key guy who scored goals in qualifying,” Porter said.

The UFC originated from a full-contact sport in Brazil. The name UFC was created in the United States in 1993 and had minimal rules. UFC was promoted as a competition to determine the most effective martial art for unarmed combat situations.UFC fighters began to morph into well-rounded and balanced fighters. UFC fighter could fight standing up or lying on the floor. After the UFC morphed into a well-rounded fighting style, the style became known as mixed martial arts (MMA).

Today, fighting takes place all over the world, where dozens fighters battle it out in the “octagon.” The octagon is designed to be safe and is 32 feet across and 6 feet high. The walls and padded surfaces protect fighters from falling out (or getting thrown out), and the wide angles prevent fighters from getting stuck in a corner with no way out.

According to Hamed Wardak, the UFC is returned to Japan after a 12 year absence. Its return was first announced in September 2011. Japan has played an important role in the evolution of “modern” MMA and was once believed to be the capital of the expanding MMA world.

The UFC will continue to expand around the world. In the coming months, UFC will also be traveling to Australia, Sweden and Brazil.

The former Chicago Bear’s Athlete, Dave Duerson’s family sues the NFL over his suicide last year. According to the Chicago Tribune, the family claims that the league had known about Duerson’s concussions from playing football and that concussion can cause brain damage, but NFL deliberately concealed that information from the players, coaches and fans.

“If the NFL would have taken the necessary steps to oversee and protect Dave Duerson by warning him of the dangers of head traumas. . .then (he) would not have suffered dangerous repetitive head trauma, would have recovered more rapidly, and would not have sustained permanent damage to his brain which contributed to his death,” according to the suit.

Athletes have admitted to hiding symptoms of concussions, but Duerson is an example of why it can be extremely dangerous. Duerson, we diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathn (CTE) following his death. CTE is advanced brain damage and is often associated with boxers taking repeated punches to the head. The Duerson family believes that there is a link between brain trauma and permanent brain damage that can lead to death.

The NFL continues to deny that chronic brain damage was the result of playing football. However, the suit mentions a number of suicides from a number of former players.

Whether the family wins the suit or not, NFL players are learning to be careful when it come to a possible head injury. Many players have admitted to in the past hiding symptoms of concussions; however, with the lawsuit, many players say that it is simply not worth the risk.

“Linsanity” led the New York Knicks with 19 points and 13 assists Wednesday with a 120-103 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers at Madison Square Garden.

There is no question that Jeremy Lin is a valuable player in the NBA and his popularity worldwide is evident. His appeal is the classic rages-to-riches story, a Harvard grad, who was nearly cut by his third team two months before lifting the Knicks into a chance to make the playoffs. Despite the game against Miami Heat, with only 8 points and 8 turnover. Fans showed no signs of stopping during the NBA All-Star Weekends, and his nick-name “Linsanity,” seems to be sticking. But what about, “Lincinerator,” “Linability,” or “Linaction…”

At the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am Sunday Phil Mickelson beats Tiger Woods by 9 stokes. Woods, in the final day of the tournament, was two strokes ahead of rival Phil Mickelson, ended the tournament tied for 15th, while Mickelson took home the win. Mickelson shot a 64, while Woods ended the game with a 75.

Mickelson says that playing with Woods is exciting and that he has played some of his best golf games against Woods. Wood’s career is far from over despite the “final-round collapse” on Sunday. Woods may not be the Woods who won every major tournament, but he’s still a solid competitor and treat against anyone that challenges him.

In the mean the time, the rivalry between Mickelson and Woods, seems be to evening out. Where at one point the rivalry seemed lop-sided, is now almost head-to-head. Mickelson has won the last five times he’s been paired against Woods – A good winning streak for Mickelson.

Super Bowl 2012 was the biggest audience on television yet. This year the game seemed to be just as interesting as the creative advertisements and the over-the-top halftime show. The combination of an exciting game, and the entertainment made this year’s Super Bowl as the 3rd consecutive record setting most-watched show on television. The game drew an estimated audience of 111.3 million people to watch the New York Giants defeat the New England Patriots, 21-17. The Washington Post calls the game one of Super Bowl’s most memorable game in four years.

For those of you who didn’t see the dozens of commercials advertising the ABC’s second season of the Voice, the first episode into the new season received more attention than another other post-Super Bowl show. TelevisionFanatic is a great way to watch what you might have missed on television.
