At the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am Sunday Phil Mickelson beats Tiger Woods by 9 stokes. Woods, in the final day of the tournament, was two strokes ahead of rival Phil Mickelson, ended the tournament tied for 15th, while Mickelson took home the win. Mickelson shot a 64, while Woods ended the game with a 75.

Mickelson says that playing with Woods is exciting and that he has played some of his best golf games against Woods. Wood’s career is far from over despite the “final-round collapse” on Sunday. Woods may not be the Woods who won every major tournament, but he’s still a solid competitor and treat against anyone that challenges him.

In the mean the time, the rivalry between Mickelson and Woods, seems be to evening out. Where at one point the rivalry seemed lop-sided, is now almost head-to-head. Mickelson has won the last five times he’s been paired against Woods – A good winning streak for Mickelson.

Super Bowl 2012 was the biggest audience on television yet. This year the game seemed to be just as interesting as the creative advertisements and the over-the-top halftime show. The combination of an exciting game, and the entertainment made this year’s Super Bowl as the 3rd consecutive record setting most-watched show on television. The game drew an estimated audience of 111.3 million people to watch the New York Giants defeat the New England Patriots, 21-17. The Washington Post calls the game one of Super Bowl’s most memorable game in four years.

For those of you who didn’t see the dozens of commercials advertising the ABC’s second season of the Voice, the first episode into the new season received more attention than another other post-Super Bowl show. TelevisionFanatic is a great way to watch what you might have missed on television.

AC Milan says Cassano has been hospitalized since Saturday, when he was taken for tests after suffering what the club described as a brain problem on the team plane.

Cassano reportedly was joking with teammates on the plane before suddenly developing problems with his vision, speech and movement. Milan said in a statement that Cassano will undergo the heart procedure sometime in the next few days, and that his recovery time will be better determined after the surgery.

On July 9th, the New York Yankees’ Derek Jeter lifted a home run into the stands in the third inning of an eventual 5-4 Yankees win over the Tampa Bay Rays for the 3,000th hit of his career. Jeter, who went 5-for-5 in the game, became the 28th player to reach 3,000 hits in his career and the first Yankee to do so.

With the Yankees trailing Tampa Bay 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Jeter lined up a pitch from Rays starting pitcher David Price and drilled it out of the park to tie the game. Though the homer tied the game at 1-1, the lead changed multiple times before a single from Ben Zobrist scored Johnny Damon in the top of the eighth and evened the score at four runs apiece.

But the tie score didn’t last long. The Yankees responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from, yes, Derek Jeter to put New York up 5-4.

His 3,000th hit came in front of a sellout crowd of 48,103 in Yankee Stadium. Wade Boggs is the only other major leaguer whose 3,000th hit was a home run.

The Yankees currently stand at second place in the American League East Division, just a game and a half behind the Boston Red Sox.

After Hope Solo and the rest of the American squad dazzled viewers with their last minute heroics in Sunday’s quarterfinal match against Brazil, the team continued its never-say-die efforts in a 3-1 victory over France in the semifinals. The score, though, doesn’t tell the whole story. The Americans came out of the gate in Wednesday’s match with guns blazing, riding off the adrenaline in their systems from their seemingly impossible quarterfinal win. The US struck early — in the ninth minute — with a goal from Lauren Cheney.

After Cheney’s goal, though, the French began to dominate, especially in the mid-field. When France’s Sonia Bompastor put the ball in the back of the net in the 55th minute, it seemed the U.S. had entirely lost the momentum it carried in the beginning of the match. But after her late goal in the US’s quarterfinal match against Brazil — the latest goal in World Cup history — Abby Wambach knew not to give up. In the 79th minute, she scored the eventual game-winner in the same fashion as she scored the equalizer against Brazil — off of her head. Substitute Alex Morgan netted an insurance goal later in the second half and the Americans went on to win the match.

This finals appearance marks the first time since 1999 that the American women will play for the World Cup Championship. There, the US will meet Japan, who reached the finals for the first time in history. Japan defeated Sweden 3-1 in its semifinal match.

Six-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer had a swift exit from the tournament this week after he blew a two-set lead against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France in the quarterfinals. Despite taking the first two sets, Federer couldn’t close the match and was defeated 3-6, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. It was the first time in 178 matches that Federer ever lost after winning the first two sets.

“It was just amazing,” Tsonga said of his victory. “I played unbelievable. Everything was in. I was two sets down, and I broke. I did a good game of return, and after that, it was just amazing. I served unbelievable.”

The news came as a shock to many tennis fans, who expected Federer — along with Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal — to easily advance to the quarterfinals. Federer, Djokovic and Nadal have won 25 of the last 26 Grand Slam titles, rounding out a big three of tennis champions.

This is the second year in a row that Federer has fallen in the quarterfinals. Last year, he was defeated by Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic.

Tsonga will now face no. 2 seed Djokovic in the semifinals. Djokovic won his quarterfinals match in four sets against Bernard Tomic 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Wimbledon, the world’s oldest tennis tournament, began Monday at the All England Club in London. Venus Williams was forced to rally in today’s second round match to take down Japan’s Kimiko Date-Krumm and advance to the third round. Williams, who is seeded 23rd this year, fell behind 6-7 in the first set, but was able to stage a 6-3 comeback in the second set. The five-time Wimbledon Champion clinched the victory with an 8-6 win in the third after almost three hours of play at Centre Court.

Though Date-Krumm was able to defeat Williams in the first set, the American’s serve was key in powering through the last two sets to win the match. Despite dropping the first set, Williams battled back after trailing 5-1 and saved seven set points throughout the set, but it still wasn’t enough.

The 40-year-old Date-Krumm, the second-oldest player to reach round two of Wimbledon, lost the match after hitting a backhand passing shot wide. The crowd of 15,000 gave the players a standing ovation after the match was completed. All of Wednesday’s other matches were delayed due to rain.

Williams missed almost five months this year due to a hip injury. She returned to action at the AEGON International Tournament in Eastbourne, England.

Thomas made 37 saves in the victory, silencing the sold-out Vancouver crowd. Though Thomas was the fourth goaltender to finish Game 7 of the finals with a shutout, he was the first goalie to do so on the road. The University of Vermont grad posted a save percentage of .967 in the finals, blocking 238 of the Vancouver’s 246 shots in the last seven games.

Backing up Thomas offensively was center Patrice Bergeron and rookie Brad Marchand, who each scored two goals in the win. Bergeron scored his first goal of the night — and the eventual game-winner — just five minutes into the first period, with Marchand grabbing the assist. After both Bergeron and Marchand netted one in the second period, the rookie put the nail in the Canucks’ coffin with an empty-netter with less than three minutes left to play.

This marks the Bruins’ first Stanley Cup victory in 39 years, the last of the Boston major franchises to win a title within the last 10 years (with the Red Sox in 2004 and 2007, the Patriots in 2001, 2003 and 2004, and the Celtics in 2008).

Li Na defeated Italian Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 7-6 (0) in the French Open women’s final yesterday to because the first Chinese player to bring home a Grand Slam Title. After Li was leading 6-5 in the second set, the Chinese player hit a backhand that hit near the sideline and was initially called out. Upon review, the line judge switched the call, enraging the desperate Schiavone. But Schiavone did not win another point, as Li slid to the ground and laid there, taking in her first Grand Slam win.

Sixth-seeded Li had lost in the third round of three of her last four French Opens, once to Schiavone, and had never won a title on clay. The 29-year-old Li and Schiavone, who turned 30 last June, marked the French Open women’s final with the oldest combined ages since 1986.

Li faced Maria Sharapova, three-time major champion, in the semi-final round and beat the Russian in straight sets 6-4, 7-5. Shiavone, last year’s champion and this year’s fifth seed, took down Marion Bartoli 6-3, 6-3 in the semi-final round.

In the finals at the Australian Open, Li fought to win her first set against Belgian Kim Clijsters — who is currently ranked no. 1 in the world — but choked and lost the match. Li is currently ranked no. 4 in the world.
