One conference victory, three straight losing seasons, and one year before the end of his contract, Bill Lynch was fired as the Hoosiers’ head coach. The reason why he was hired was to move the team up from the last spot of the Big Ten. Leaving Indiana’s grounds he also leaves behind a team that, after a promising start, remains, once again, at the bottom of the table.
Even though players ensured that their coach was not the issue, athletic director Fred Glass took the necessary steps to foster a positive change. “My view was that, given the circumstances of the last three seasons, that extending the contract was not a viable option. It would send the wrong signal of what merited an extension at Indiana University.” He could have waited another year and given the coach another chance but looking back at three years and a losing record of 19-30 how would the next year look any different?
