While all eyes are on the NCAA basketball playoffs, the NCAA wrestling championships took place over the weekend. Athletes showing off their hard work are present on mats spread throughout the arena. The new 125-pounds NCAA Wrestling National Champion, who beat his opponent 7-1 on Sunday during the final, is what many would call one of the greatest inspirational wrestlers. Anthony Robles was born with only one leg. The Arizona State wrestler defeated the defending national champ, Matt McDonough of Iowa, recording a perfect season.

Where some people might have had doubts, he showed no signs of that. “My coaches prepared me well,” Robles said after taking the 125-pound weight class title. “We’ve been working all year and the past few years on quick draws, quick stick… I couldn’t have done it without him. I felt super confidant out there and it was a team effort. I want to thank my training partners and my family for supporting me and it wasn’t just me out there. I was doing it for all them, too. It feels great to be a national champion.” His strength comes from walking on crutches day in and day out. His grip is much stronger than most wrestlers in his weight class, which helps him with takedowns and turns. Looking back at the tournament, one can begin to understand why he does not consider himself disabled.
